garmin nuvi 200w voices

What does text-to-speech mean?

The Garmin nuvi 200W has turn-by-turn voice instructions, but it does NOT have text-to-speech. I thought they were the same thing..can you tell me the difference between the two?

Turn by turn voice instructions are things like “Turn left here” and “Proceed 10 miles”. They are prerecorded messages, usually based on a real voice. They sound relatively normal. Virtually all present day NAV units can do this.

Text-to-speech adds to that feature by enabling the device to say street names (and often landmarks, etc.). A device WITHOUT text-to-speech will say “Turn left ahead” while a device with text-to-speech will say “Turn left ahead Scottsdale Road”. It reads the street names.

Keep in mind – the pronunciation of the street names will not always be accurate. It does its best but it still sounds like a computer voice.

I like it. If you live in an area or travel to a place with a lot of strange street names, you might turn it off. It could get irritating. It’s good to have as an option.

Hope that helps!
