How do you apply a layer mask on Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0?
My dad showed me how to do it in a more advanced version of photoshop, and I only have elements. I can’t figure it out in this thing! I want to be able to put on a layer mask so that I could make just certain parts of a picture have a filter. idk how to explain it, but yeah I just need help!?
Masks are only obtained with Elements through the use of Adjustment Layers. Here is an explanation that you might be looking for.
Open both or more photos. Make sure they are the same ppi by Image > Resize > Resize Image and look at the resolution number. If different, uncheck “Resample” and change so they are the same. If printing use a high number, like 240-300 ppi.
Set the window so you can see both photos, if not all, in part. The photo, photo #1, you want as the background to the other, in the Layer Palette, click on the Adjustment layer icon (the circle filled half with black and half with white). Select as the Adjustment layer Levels and click OK. Now go to photo #2. Select all of it or a portion of it. Click the Move tool, then click and drag the selection to photo #1, it will become Layer 1. With the Move tool still active, move the image if you wish to position it over the photo #1. With Layer 1 active, press Ctrl+G. This clips Layer 1 to the Adjustment layer.
Now the fun. Click the white rectangle in the Levels Adjustment layer. Check that you colors are black and white with the black as the foreground color. Choose a SOFT and so-so size Brush and paint the adjustment layer with black. Where you paint with black, photo #1 will reveal itself. If you make a mistake and paint in the wrong place, switch the color to white and paint with white to conceal the mistake.
You can also use a similar procedure for editing a single photo, one say that is dark on one side and about correct on the other. In this case, click to create the Adjustment Layer, choose Levels or Brightness/Contrast. Then make adjustments so the bad part look more correct. Click in the white square of the adjustment layer, and use the brush with black color to exposed the better part of the image below.
This is using Masks in Elements, some think that Masks are impossible. Instead of a brush, you can also use a black to white gradient. Again, the black will reveal and the white will conceal.
