Size of a hiking pack?

Im going on a 83 mile hiking trip this summer in New Mexico, and I currently have a pack that is 2900 Cubic Inches. Is this an okay size for hiking with a large group? Im trying to keep my pack about 30-34 lbs. I am 5’9 and weigh 130 lbs.. I am unsure whether or not I will be able to carry group objects such as food and still be able to hold my pack items. I have a Rei Lookout.
I am hiking for 10 days, with the miles hiked changing each day.

I have high quality clothing, so I plan to wear, wash, and hang on my pack to dry.

2900 ci is way ok for a big long trip like that. if you are going with a group, and can share gear like tents, stoves, and cooking gear, it’s perfect. i tend to use any available space in my pack, hence a larger pack=more crap i don’t need=not so much fun. i’m going on a trip next week, but will have to carry all my own stuff. i’ll take my OLD mtn. smith internal frame which is like 5500ci or something like that. gonna’ try REAL hard not to take crap i don’t need. for a solo trip, my pack normally weighs about 50+ lbs, but i’m fattish (6’1″, 255), so it’s not quite as bad. your pack should ideally weigh about 20-25% of your body weight, so for you, 30lbs is perfect. if you are worried about space, you should find out what shared gear will be used, and what you will have to carry for the group. a really crazy light down sleeping bag is a great way to save space. my wife’s 20 degree is teeny tiny compared to my synthetic bag, although i personally wouldn’t use a down bag unless absolutely zero moisture was in forecast. get together with the other members of your group, and figure out what will work best for everyone. I once did a five day hike with a 70 lb. pack, and I’m not sure my knees have recovered. where in NM are you going? e-mail me and let me know. I live in eastern arizona right on the NM border, and would like to get some info on backpacking over there on the gila or aldo leopold.
