When is the last time you went camping and what did you sleep in and what did you do?
I went camping this weekend for the first time in 35 years. We slept in our Odessy (mini van). We went with a group of friends, but no boats, jet skis, tours or anything. We had to remember how to relax. Just sat around and read trash magazines, ate, drank and played in the lake.
The first time we went camping as a family was the summer of 1975 in Sardinia (big island off the west coast of Italy). We drove from the northern end of the island (Santa Teresa) to the southern end (about 6 hours) to Cagliari. We stopped for something to eat and I asked about a camp ground. I was told to follow a certain road and when I got to some woods, go ahead and set up camp ANYWHERE. We were near some dunes near the Mediterranean. We put up our tent, hooked my small American flag to the ‘porch’ pole and spent 4 days meeting all kinds of people from all over, swimming, laying around. The boys played with kids from all over Europe and North Africa. I had taken my trusty guitar and there were others there with instruments. Every night we jammed with folks all around. Most didn’t understan English, but really enjoyed my OLD country music. There were no showers, no running water, no toilets….ROUGH camping at its best! We had a BLAST!
The last time was at the Amelia Country Camp Ground outside Richmond, Va back about 1979 at a big blue grass festival. It cost $20 each for my wife and I for Fri/Sat/Sun for the festival AND camping fees. To follow up on that, my son’s wife’s family was having a family reunion up there a few years ago….guess who owned the camp ground….the great aunt/uncle of my daughter-in-law. My son said the place really looked familiar to him and he thought he was having a case of deja vu all over again until I reminded him he’d been up there at the age of 6. Course we had our tent, but there was swimming and a shower/toilets, running water, a store. Not REALLY camping.
